Abstract

<PICT:1014600/C1/1> <PICT:1014600/C1/2> An apparatus for producing glass fibres comprises a bushing 10 having a plurality of orifices through which streams of glass are discharged for drawing into primary fibres by means 16, 18, and a comb 20 for separating the fibres, the comb having a plurality of spaced flexible teeth 32, alternate teeth being of greater length than the other teeth to permit easy threading of the fibres. A comb 24 may be interposed between the bushing 10 and the comb 20, near to the bushing, for gathering the fibres into a predetermined lateral area. The fibres then pass over an idler roller 25, through the comb 20, and then through a lower guide means 22 into a hot gaseous blast supplied from a means 26 closely adjacent the lower guide means for attenuating the primary fibres into small diameter fibres which are collected on a moving foraminous conveyer 28 as a blanket or mat for subsequent processing. The lower guide means is a fixed position rotatable cylindrical member having grooves around its periphery corresponding in spacing with the spaces between the pins 32 of the comb 20.
