Abstract

1,014,382. Thermonuclear apparatus. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Aug. 19, 1963 [Aug. 24, 1962], No. 32531/62. Heading C6P. The ions of a plasma discharge contained in a magnetic field are heated by the injection into the plasma of a low-frequency electromagnetic oscillation. The plasma is subjected to two high-frequency oscillations which penetrate into the interior and which have values such that the difference frequency is low enough to equal the ion cyclotron frequency. A circular cross-section cavity is subjected to an axially directed D.C. magnetic field and contains low-pressure helium or hydrogen. The electromagnetic waves are directed into the cavity, through a broad-band amplifier from two klystron oscillators. A probe coil measures the rate of charge of the axial magnetic field. The plasma functions as a non- linear impedance and thus produces sum and difference frequencies of the applied oscillations.
