Abstract

An abrasive pad or web comprises a non- woven web of randomly interlaced fibres bonded at crossing contact points by a binder having a Knoop hardness number of 6 or less, preferably 1 or 2, forming a substantially continuous film about the fibres, and abrasive grains resiliently bonded to the fibres to form a protective covering generally throughout their length. The fibres may be of organic material, such as nylon, crimped or curled three-dimensionally and brought into interlaced non-woven relation and integrated into a pad or web by a plasticized elastomer binder, e.g. rubber, latex, butadiene-styrene dispersions, neoprene, polyvinyl chloride or vinyl latex. The binder may be sprayed or rolled on the web or the latter may be dipped into a slurry of the binder. The abrasive grains, which may be silicon carbide, aluminium oxide, garnet, flint, emery or pumice,' may be applied with the binder or applied after the binder by gravity, rolling or electrostatic deposition; two coatings of binder may be applied. The binder and abrasive may be applied from one or both sides of the web. The finished web may be secured to a belt for abrading articles, such as bumpers.
