Abstract

Oxidation of articles contained in a hermetically sealed container is prevented by including in the container a catalyst, a compound which in the presence of the catalyst reacts with oxygen in the container to produce water vapour, and a desiccant to absorb the water vapour; the quantities of catalyst, compound and desiccant are selected so that substantially all the oxygen in the container is converted to water and all this water is then absorbed by the desiccant. In a preferred embodiment of the invention the desiccant is placed as close as possible to the source of production of water vapour so that temporary condensation on the articles in the container is avoided, e.g. the catalyst and desiccant are mixed together and contained in a single porous container, or a plastics sachet. In the case of ferrous articles a corrosion preventing or corrosion reducing agent may also be introduced into the compound. Suitable catalysts are platinized carbon, or palladium or rhodium carried by alumina, silica or calcium carbonate. The compound may be p methyl alcohol or methyl formate, and this may be introduced into the porous container containing the catalyst and desiccant by means of a burette, a syringe or as a spray. Any suitable desiccant may be employed, e.g. calcium sulphate, silica gel, or activated charcoal.
