Abstract

1,014,030. Cooling gearing. DAIMLERBENZ A.G. Oct. 29, 1964 [Oct. 31, 1963], No. 44241/64. Heading F2D. In an arrangement having an internal combustion engine 1 driving an air-cooled generator 4 through a resilient coupling 2 and gearing 3, the generator cooling air is used to cool the gearing. As shown, a fan 9 draws air in through an inlet 10 and discharges through an opening 11. All or parts of the air issuing from the opening 11 enters a trough 12 and flows through a jacket 13 surrounding the gear-box to effectively cool the gear-box lubricant and the gearing. The cooling effect may be increased by roughening the walls of the gear-box or by providing cooling ribs or the like. Alternatively the gear-box may be provided with an oil reservoir and the air be used for cooling the gear-box oil by means of a coil or pipes passing through the reservoir or a jacket bounding the reservoir. The proportion of the generator cooling air delivered to the gear-box may be varied by varying a direct outlet to the atmosphere at the opening 11. The size of the outlet from the jacket 13 may also be adjustable.
