Abstract

1,013,689. Power hammers. SCOVILL MANUFACTURING CO. March 13, 1963 [March 13, 1962], No. 9593/62. Heading B3H. [Also in Division F1] An impact air cylinder having a piston 19 for operating a press punch 28 connected thereto, comprises an upper cylinder 12 separated from a lower cylinder 13 by a central plate 11 provided with first and second non-return valves 21, 23 and having an aperture 24 containing a sealing ring 26 which engages an extension 25 of the piston 19 when in its upper position in the lower cylinder. In operation pressure air is supplied through an inlet duct 16 to the upper chamber 12 to act on the extension 25 and when a sufficient pressure is built up in the chamber 12 the piston 19 moves downwardly and the extension 25 descends below the sealing ring 26 so that the whole surface of the piston 19 is suddenly exposed to the air pressure and the piston thereby continues downwardly at increased speed. The first non-return valve 21 allows atmospheric air to enter the space between the central plate 11 and the piston 19 in order to prevent a vacuum forming therein. The piston 19 is cushioned at the end of the downward stroke by a boss 31 thereon coacting with a chamber 30 through which air in the lower cylinder passes to an outlet duct 18. A multi-way control valve (not shown) is operated to return the piston, whereby air is supplied through the duct 18 and exhausted through the duct 16, the second non-return valve 23 preventing air from being trapped between the central plate 11 and the piston 19.
