Abstract

A perforated gas/liquid contact tray over which liquid while being contacted with a rising gas flows from a liquid inlet 136 to a liquid outlet 148 has adjacent the liquid inlet a sloping surface 160 so that, owing to the lower depth of liquid in this zone, bubbles of the rising gas are more easily formed in the liquid adjacent the liquid inlet than in the liquid on the remainder of the tray. The tray may have slots instead of or in addition to the perforations shown. The tangent of the angle between the portion 160 and the main portion of the tray is preferably between 1/5 and 1/3À5 and the ratio of the perforated to imperforated area of the portion 160 and the main portion of the tray are substantially the same.
