Abstract
1,013,324. Charging batteries; machines with permanent magnets. SYNCHRO CORPORATION. Oct. 29, 1963, No. 42693/63. Headings H2A and H2H. [Also in Division G3] Voltage regulation.-A generator and regulator system for charging a battery includes a controlled rectifier connected so that it operates to short-circuit the load windings of the generator when the battery voltage exceeds a predetermined value. As shown a generator 11 has load windings 19, connected across a fullwave rectifier bridge 26 for charging a battery 12, and regulating windings 21 which are connected in series with the load windings 19. A silicon controlled rectifier 37 in series with the windings 19 and 21 forms a closed circuit therewith by way of diode 31, and a voltage sensing circuit constituted by a Zener diode 38 and a rheostat 39 is connected across the battery 12 and to the gate of the controlled rectifier 38. The load windings charge the battery through the rectifier bridge 26 until the battery voltage exceeds the threshold of the sensing circuit so that a gating current will begin to flow; when the gating power is sufficient, the controlled rectifier 37 will be rendered conductive during each alternate half-cycle to short circuit load and regulating windings and to reduce the charging current to zero. On intervening halfcycles, the controlled rectifier 37 returns to a blocking state, but the flux produced by the collapsing field in the windings saturates the generator poles and thus also reduces the charging current; the battery voltage then falls to a value insufficient to cause conduction of the controlled rectifier 37, and charging again commences. This cycle continues to maintain the battery voltage at a predetermined value. A second controlled rectifier may be provided so that equal regulation is obtained on both half-cycles of the generated voltage (Fig. 6, not shown), and the system may include a reactor to improve regulation at higher generator speeds (Fig. 7, not shown). In another embodiment, the regulating windings and the controlled rectifier are connected in series across the battery terminals (Fig. 8, not shown). Generator.-The generator comprises a rotor 15, constituted by a ring of magnetic material carrying ceramic magnets 17, and a stator 16 formed with poles each of which carries two separate windings, the load winding 19 and the regulating winding 21, the coils on each pole having a close magnetic coupling.
