Abstract

A cylindrical canister 46 is conveyed past a conventional metal spraying appliance 53 by rows of driven rollers 47, 48 which impart both rotation and translation to the canister. Each roller 47, 48 is mounted by bearing means on a shaft 49 carried between plates 50, 51 by a pivot pin 52. The perimeter of the rollers 47, 48 are of rubber and they are driven by frictional contact with drive shafts 16, 17 driven by a common motor 21 at the same peripheral speed. An hydraulic ram 40 operates through a linkage 41 to raise or lower both drive shafts 16, 17 the same amount simultaneously to alter the inclination of the rotational axes of the rollers 47, 48 and thereby vary the relative rate of rotation and translation of the canister, as may be required when different diameters of the canister 46 pass the spraying appliance 53. Each canister 46 is received from a conveyer indicated at 59 on a cradle 54 pivoted at 55 to tip the canister on to the rollers 47, 48 under the action of an hydraulic ram 57. Discharge from the rollers 47, 48 is effected by a kick-off device 60 actuated by an hydraulic ram 62, the canisters being received on a further conveyer indicated at 61. In the modification shown in Fig. 3, instead of the drive shafts 16, 17 (which terminate in spindles 24, 25) being raised and lowered to alter the obliquity of the axes of rotation of the rollers 47, 48 in auxiliary framework 67, 68, 69, 70, 74 carrying the pivot pins 52 between the plates 50, 51 may be raised or lowered by a set of two pairs of screw jacks 71, 72, one pair at each end of the conveyer. The canister 46 may operate sensing means (not shown) to control the obliquity of the axes of rotation of the rollers 47, 48 and the kick-off device 60.
