Abstract

A silica gel containing a hydrous metal oxide is prepared by incorporating in a silica sol 2 to 6 weight per cent based on the silica content of the sol of a metal salt which can be hydrolysed to a hydrous oxide, gelling the sol, washing the gel with acidic water and activating the gel. The metal salt may be the bromide, chloride, iodide, sulphate or nitrate of germanium, zirconium, tin, hafnium, lead, thorium, or cerium or a basic aluminium salt. The amount of metal salt is preferably such that the gel contains 0.5 to 2.5% by weight of the hydrous metal oxide based on the weight of silica in the gel. The silica sol may be prepared by the hydrolysis of silicon tetrachloride or tetrafluoride or ethyl orthosilicate or by the reaction of an alkali metal silicate and a mineral salt. The metal salt, in solution in the minimum amount of water, or as a liquid, is added to the sol, or the metal salt plus sulphuric acid may be added to sodium silicate. The mixture is allowed to gel for e.g. 15 to 30 minutes and the gel after ageing for several hours at 50-70 DEG C. with water at pH 2.5-3.5. After drying and activation the total volatiles in the gel is no more than 7%. The gels show high absorptive capacity at low relative humidities (see Division B1).ALSO:A silica gel containing a hydrous metal oxide e.g. of Ti, Ge, Zr, Sn, Hf, Pb, Th and Ce, is prepared by incorporating in a silica sol 2-6% by weight based on the silica content of the sol of a metal salt which can be hydrolysed to a hydrous oxide, gelling the sol, washing the gel with acidic water and activating the gel. The gel shows an increased adsorptive capacity for water at relative humidities below 30%, and is particularly useful for drying "Freon" (Registered Trade Mark) natural gas and air.
