Abstract

The new form of silica gel claimed has loss-on-ignition (between 120 and 1000 degrees) of >3%, and an 'activity value' such that a fraction having max. particle size in the range 10-20 mu m can be reduced to 3 mu m by ultrasonic energy of 6500 J in a jet-mill. It has the open-chain structure but is more easily broken down than is the pyrogenic SiO2 produced, e.g. by decompn. of SiCl4. The mfr. process involves reacting primary SiO2 particles with alkali metal silicate at a temp. between 85 degrees and the b.pt., partly neutralising with acid, adding an alkali metal salt, e.g. NaCl, separating and purifying the flocculent ppt. of SiO2, drying it, pref. in a spray-drier to minimise agglomeration and, opt., jet-milling. The prod. finds application as filler in silicone rubbers and other synthetic plastics, esp. polyester resins.
