A developer for latent electro static images consists of a mixture of iron powder and a toner comprising a solid solution of dyestuff in a resin which assumes, as the result of the turboelectric effect, a negative charge with respect to iron which is at least three times the size of the charge which would be acquired by an identical quantity of a polystyrene resin. Preferably, the proportion by weight of resin to dyestuff is in the range of 20: 1 to 10: 1 and the proportion of toner to iron is in the range of 1: 15 to 1: 50 the resin may be a ketone resin, a malcurate resin, phthalate resin, "Vinsol" (Registered Trade Mark) and the dyestuff may be "Ceresschwarz", Chromogene Black Etoo, Sudantiefschwarz, Azo Oil Black. At least 55% of the particles of the toner may have a size between 10 and 20 Á.
