Abstract

1,012,165. De-icing aircraft. T. E. EVANS. Nov. 27, 1961 [Aug. 25, 1960], No. 6643/60. Heading B7W. [Also in Division H5] A leading-edge section 9 (Fig. 1) of an aerofoil, e.g. an aircraft wing, comprises a skin or shell 91 and supporting members 10, 13 made of ferromagnetic material, e.g. laminated iron alloy, which are magnetized by passage of alternating current in a coil-winding 11 to effect heating of the skin by induced electric currents circulating in a coating of metal, e.g. copper and/or silver, 17 (Fig. 6) on the inner and outer surfaces thereof, the coatings being connected to one another to form closed loops by slots 16 filled with said metal by, e.g. electrodeposition. Heating of the skin may be partially effected by relatively large eddy-currents circulating therein, the ferromagnetic material being rendered solid, rather than laminated, or of low resistivity. Skin 91 may be secured to members 10, 13 by screws (Fig. 2, not shown). alternatively, the ends of the skin may be turned inwardly to form two adjacent closed loops or U-shaped members, the members 10, 13 being omitted; otherwise, member 10 may be laminated with some of the laminations extended and shaped to form the skin.
