Abstract

In apparatus for laminating polythene or other plastics material 10, Fig. 1, extrudes from a nozzle 12 to a substrate 16 between chill rolls 18 a non- oxidizing atmosphere is maintained on the non- laminated face of the material 10 by delivery of hot combustion products 22 from a tubular nozzle 20 which may be fixed or oscillatable, the gases 22 being supplied from a heat exchanger which may also supply hot air through a tubular nozzle 49 to the laminated face of the material 10. The delivery apertures of the nozzle 20 preferably comprise a line of slits spaced from one another in the wall of the tube. The gas generating apparatus comprises air and gas intakes 34, 40, a Venturi mixer 46, a spark combustion-initiator 28 and a heat exchanger comprising a refractory tube 32 and an outer jacket 30, combustion gases being delivered from the tube 32 to the nozzle 20 via a line 52 including a T-piece 62 and a window 54, and heated air being delivered to the nozzle 49 from the jacket 30 via a pipe containing a blower 48. Electric power supplied at 56 operates the pressure air supply, a solenoid gas cut-off valve 42, optionally a pressure safety switch 50, and, on momentary closure of a switch 50 on starting up, the spark plug 28. A gas-pressure regulator 43 is connected to the combustion gases delivery pipe by a pressure equalizing tube 64.
