Abstract
A glass article, for example a cathode-ray tube, has at least part of its surface coated with a layer subject to compressive stress, the layer consisting of an at least partly crystalline glaze having a composition comprising at least 75 mol. per cent of ZnO and B2O3 in a molecular ratio of from 1 : 3 to 3 : 1, the balance, if any, of not more than 25 mol. per cent consisting of other compatible constituents such as one of the oxides of V2O5, Sb2O5, WO3, MoO3, TiO2, ZrO2, PbO, SiO2, Li2O, Al2O3, Fe2O3, or Cr2O3. In a coating composition of the invention the proportion of Al2O3 or SiO2 does not exceed 6 mol. per cent. The layer is applied to the article as a mixture, preferably in a suspension, and the whole heated to a temperature of from 550 DEG to 675 DEG C. for a period of from 5 to 10 minutes, and gives a glass having a coefficient of expansion of from 30 to 40 x 10-7/ DEG C. A suitable glass substrate may have the composition SiO2 68.2%; Na2O 16.8%; K2O 1.0%; CaO 5.5%; BaO 2.0%; MgO 4.0%; Al2O3 2.5%.
