Abstract

A method of locally strengthening a glass object, e.g. a cathode-ray tube, comprises coating a zone of the object in which tensile stresses may occur with a layer of devitrifiable glaze having a coefficient of expansion lower than that of the glass object and heating the zone until the glaze acquires a crystal structure. A suspension of powdered glaze in ethyl acetate, alcohol or water which may contain a binder, e.g. nitro-cellulose, may be applied by spraying, smearing or dipping. In an example, a glass object having the composition 70.3% SiO2, 0.5% Li2O, 7.8% Na2O, 7.5% K2O, 11.1% BaO, 2.5% Al2O3, 0.3% Sb2O3 (coefficient of expansion 95 x 10-7 at 30-300 DEG C.) is coated with a devitrifiable glaze consisting of 22.7% B2O3, 68.2% ZnO, 9.1% P2O5 (coefficient of expansion 45 x 10-7 at 30-300 DEG C.).
