Regulating head of liquid directly; solid in separate charges in generator.-An acetvlene-generator comprises a water tank a with an enlarged top b, a gas-bell c, a generating-bell d, and carbide - con - tainer e; the bells c, d are connected by an inverted U-tube o, the end q of which dips into the gas-bell and is below the lever of the top of the carbide-container e, so that the gas pressures in the bells c, d, are equal, and entry of water over the top of the carbide-container is prevented. The carbide is arranged in a series of trays h, i, k divided into compartments by partitions l, m, n; water enters by an opening f, passing under the guide-wall g to the bottom of the container, and enters the several carbide compartments in succession through the openings 1 - - 12; gas is led off for consumption by the pipe s. In a modified construction, the partitions l, m, n are omitted, and the end q of the pipe o is flush with the top of the gas-bell c, which is below the level of the top of the carbide-container e.
