Regulating head of liquid directly; separating residue from unused solid in generators. - In a generator for obtaining gas under comparatively high pressure, a carbide-cage g is supported in a compartment b which may he in the form of a fixed bell, in a water-tank a and is supplied with water from a raised feed-tank f, connected at its base with an inverted U-tube p which rises above the tank. The outer limb of the U-tube is connected to the gas-bell b and the inner limb through a cock q to a pipe l which passes downwards to the base of the water tank and then upwards to the top of the carbide cage. In action, the gas from the bell b depresses the level of the water in the inner limb of the U-tube, and cuts off the water supply when the level is below the cock q. The carbidecage is supported on a hollow rod h and is adapted to be moved up and down by a handle k to shake the lime from the unused carbide. Sludge is removed from the tank a through a valve s. The gas may be passed into a floating gas-bell, the movements of which may be utilized to shake the carbide-cage, or, when more than one carbide-cage is used, to change over the feed of water from one to another.
