Abstract
The invention comprises diammonium salts of the formula <FORM:1011559/C2/1> wherein R is a substantial phenoxy radical or a substituted or unsubstituted naphthoxy radical, the substituents being selected from halogen atoms, e.g. Cl, Br or F, nitro and amino groups and alkyl, alkoxy, aryl, aralkyl, aryloxy and aralkoxy groups of up to 9 carbon atoms, n is an integer from 6 to 16 and X is an equivalent of an acid anion; together with the process for their preparation by reacting an N,N-dimethylamine of the general formula R.CH2CH2.N : (CH3)2 with a diester of the formula X.(CH2)n.X, wherein X represents a reactive acid anion, if desired converting the product (wherein X is a reactive acid anion) into one in which X is a non-reactive acid anion, by treating it with a strong base or anion exchanger resin in the hydroxide form and reacting the resulting derivative with the desire acid. Products wherein R bears an amino substituent are made by reducing the nitro corresponding compound. Suitably, the radical X may be a halide, sulphate, phosphate, nitrate, acetate, propionate, tartrate, citrate, maleate, fumarate, succinate, adipate, arylsulphonate or sulphamate radical. 2 - Aryloxyethyl - dimethylamines of the formula R.CH2.CH2.N:(CH3)2 are made by condensing the appropriate sodium phenate or naphthate with 2-dimethylaminoethyl chloride.ALSO:Antibacterial preparations comprise diammonium salts of formula <FORM:1011559/A5-A6/1> wherein R is a substituted phenoxy radical or a substituted or unsubstituted naphthoxy radical, the substituents being selected from halogen atoms e.g. Cl, Br or F, nitro and amino groups and alkyl, alkoxy, aryl, aralkyl, aryloxy and aralkoxy groups of up to 9 carbon atoms, n is an integer from 6 to 16 and X is an equivalent of an acid anion, and an excipient. The preparations may take the form of antiseptic solutions for disinfection of rooms, instruments and fabrics, or preparations suitable for use as antiseptics in human therapy, for example, solutions, suspensions, ointments, pommades or aerosols. Solvents used as excipients may contain stabilizers and wetting agents.
