Abstract

1,011,538. Gear-cutting. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Oct. 27, 1961 [July 27, 1960], No. 26070/60. Heading B3K. [Also in Division G3] A machine for manufacturing gears, such as a gear-hobbing or -grinding machine, comprises a motor 6 for rotating a work table 1 and a motor 7 for rotating a tool 2, and means 12 for comparing signals generated by the motors and for controlling one of the motors so that their rates of rotation remain in a desired relationship. The rotation of the tool 2 is detected by a photo-electric sensing device 9 associated with a radial optical grating 8. A similar device 11 generates a signal in accordance with the rotation of the table 1. The comparator 12 receives signals from the devices 9 and 11 and controls the speed of the motor 6 by rotating the casing by means of a mechanism 13. A cam 14 rotates with the table 1 and modifies the signals of the device 11 to compensate for irregularities in the table worm drive 4, 5. A light 16 is flashed by a cam 17 to give a stroboscopic effect for checking the engagement of the gear and tool.
