Undue distortion of resilient metal sealing rings 2, 2<SP>1</SP>, retained with minimal clearance permitting peripheral rotation within the walls 8, 9, 10 of a peripheral groove formed by butterfly closure 11 and retaining ring 12, is prevented by rigid ring 4 retained with clearance within annular chamber 3 therebetween. The sealing ring assembly may also be employed in sleeve valves.
