Abstract
927,502. Valves. F. E. SWAIN. Jan. 15, 1962 [Feb. 10, 1961], No. 4954/61. Class 135. The periphery 8, Fig. 1, of a butterfly closure 6 cooperates with a seat 10 offset axially and angularly from the rotational axis 7 and housed in an annular body recess 13, one side of which is formed by an adjustable collar 14. Gaps X, Y are provided between the seat and recess to permit radial and axial movement of the seat 10, the gap X being sealed by a rubber or like resilient ring 17 in groove 18; the gap Y is made equal to the tolerances in the closure bearings. The seat 10 may be composed of a rubber part 15 and a resilient metal reinforcing member 16, a flange of which may abut one wall of the recess; the member 16 may be totally enclosed in the part 15 or dispensed with. The ring 17 may be of metal having a sliding fit in the groove 18. In another form, a silicone rubber sealing ring 17, Fig. 2, is mounted in a groove 19 in the periphery of the resilient metal seat 11. In a further form, the sealing ring is made of metal and is slidable in the groove 19. In these two forms the seat has bands 22 to reduce to area of engagement with the recess and so limit heat losses; preferably the seat has two frusto-conical surfaces so that it may be reversed to increase its useful life. The seat may be of L-section.
