Abstract

1,010,598. Knitting; treating textiles. CELANESE CORPORATION OF AMERICA. March 7, 1962 [March 9, 1961], No. 8750/62. Headings D1K and D1P [Also in Division A5] A cover for a sanitary towel or wound dressing weighs less than one ounce per square yard and is warp knitted from multifilament yarns of less than 150 denier impregnated with a mineral oil-based conditioning agent to provide the fabric with a capillarity factor of from 6 to 9 and preferable 7 to 8. The capillarity factor is the number of centimetres that water will in 48 hours travel up a strip of fabric 3. 2 to 3. 8 cms wide with its lower end immersed in water. The fabric may be knitted on its lower end immersed in water. The fabric may be knitted on a two bar warp knitting machine, the yarns from one bar being knitted into chains while those of the other bar span several needles. The stitch pattern may be such as to form wales along which the fabric is readily splittable whereas other areas are non-splittable either because they are knitted in a different stitch or because they are bonded. The fabric may comprise yarn of 10 to 100 denier and yarn of 10 to 75 denier e.g. of cellulose acetate. The filament deniers are preferably less than 5 and the twist less than 10 and preferably less than 1 turn per inch. One bar of the warp knitting machine may be threaded 1 in 2 out and the stitch pattern may be 1-0, 0-1. The warps of the second bar may have a stitch pattern of (1-0, 3-4 x times), 1-0, 6-7 where x is an integer preferably 1. Other suitable patterns are 1-0, 6-7, 3-4, 6-7; or 1-0, 6-7, 3-4, 6-7, 1-0, 3-4. The second set of yarns may follow a 1-0, 3-4 pattern for about 18 inches and then for about an inch a stronger fabric is formed e.g. as shown in Fig. 1 or by forming stitch patterns 1-0, 3-4, 1-0 respectively on the two bars. Some of the warp threads, preferably some of the chains may be differently coloured to indicate the back of the towel. Alternatively, every 18 inches along the fabric an inch strip may be bonded either solidly or in a pattern of strips, circles or the like. Otherwise all the fabric may be bonded. Bonding of cellulose acetate may be effected by an adhesive, e.g. polyvinyl acetate latex, plasticizers e.g. glycerol triacetate, triethyl citrate di-methoxyethyl phthalate and methyl ethoxyethyl phthalate or aqueous acetone diluted solvent or heat. The conditioning agent may comprise a mineral oil, a partial ester of phosphoric acid with a long chain aliphatic alcohol and an alkylamino ester of a long chain aliphatic acid and an acetate of a polyvalent metal, e.g. aluminium acetate, and preferably includes a water-repellent wax, an emulsifying agent, an alkyl phenol and a lower alkanol. The conditioning agent may be applied by rollers to the yarn.
