Abstract

A process for treating solids with a solvent for a contaminant in the solids comprises the steps of washing the solids by slurrying some of the solids with washing solvent in each one of a series of washing tanks, the solvent : solids ratio by weight in each tank being approximately equal, and then filtering in the tank in which each slurry was formed at least a portion of that slurry transferring an approximately equal quantity of the material of each filter-cake so formed to the respective succeeding washing tank in the series and to a washed-solids collection vessel in respect of the final cake, transferring an approximately equal quantity of each filtrate to the respective preceding tank in the series and to a filtrate collection vessel in respect of the final filtrate adding a fresh quantity of washing solvent to the solvent-depleted final tank in the series to restore the solids : solvent ratio therein, adding a fresh quantity of solids to the solids-depleted first tank in the series to restore the solvent : solids ratio by weight therein, washing the solids again by reslurrying in each tank the solids with the solvent, and repeating the cycle of steps as often as is required. The example given relates to the washing of a hydrochloric acid activated bleaching material in the form of a slurry having a 20% solids content.
