Abstract
o-, m- and p-Trifluoromethyl benzoic acids are prepared by reacting the corresponding chloro-substituted trifluoromethylbenzene with a metal cyanide, e.g. cuprous cyanide, and saponifying the resulting trifluoromethyl benzonitrile. The reaction between the chlorocompound and the metal cyanide is preferably carried out by heating the reactants under superatmospheric pressure in an inert organic solvent, e.g. N-methylpyrrolidone, dimethylformamide, dimethylsulphoxide and sulpholane. The saponification of the nitrile is carried out in known manner, e.g. by refluxing the nitrile with a solution of an alkali metal hydroxide in a mixture of water and alcohol. Some trifluoromethylbenzoic acid amide may be obtained as a by-product in the formation of the cyanide.
