Abstract

Organic acetates are obtained by reacting an olefin or an alkyl benzene with oxygen and acetic acid at an elevated temperature in the gaseous phase in the presence of a palladium metal catalyst which contains an alkali metal acetate and/or an alkaline earth metal acetate, the catalyst mixture being formed before it is placed in the reaction zone. Specified starting materials are ethylene, propylene, isobutylene, toluene and xylene. The reactants are preferably used in a concentrated form. Suitable temperatures are in the range 100-180 DEG C. The catalyst is preferably supported on a carrier, e.g. aluminium oxide. Examples relate to the preparation of vinyl, allyl and benzyl acetates.ALSO:Catalysts comprising palladium metal and an alkali metal acetate and/or alkaline earth metal acetate are used in the reaction of an olefin with oxygen and acetic acid to yield acetates. The catalyst may be supported on a carrier, e.g. aluminium oxide. The catalyst may be applied to the carrier by impregnation with an aqueous palladium salt solution followed by reduction, e.g. with hydrazine hydrate and treatment with an aqueous solution of the alkali metal and/or alkaline earth metal acetate.
