Abstract

1,009,737. Ramps; platform elevators. J. G. BROWN. Sept. 17, 1964, [June 19, 1963] No. 24361/63. Headings B8E and B8H. Vertical movement of a platform 11 on a ship is controlled by a hinged ramp 12 or sensing arm resting on the quay 14, the arrangement being such that pivoting of the ramp or arm due to rising or falling of the ship main - tains the platform substantially level with the quay. As shown in Fig. 2, the ramp is hinged to the platform by means of an hydraulic rotary actuator 13, and an actuating lever 16 is secured to the ramp or hinge and is arranged to operate the spindles of two opposed valves 17, 18 mounted on the platform and controlling hydraulic apparatus for raising and lowering the platform. The ramp is thereby automatically retained within the limits 12a, 12b defined by the positions of the two valves. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the lever 16 is mounted on the platform 11 and is rotated by a sensing arm connected at one end to the lever 16 and having its other end resting on the quay. A time delay may be incorporated in the control circuit to prevent movement of the platform in response to movements of the ramp or arm caused by surging of the ship due to sea conditions.
