A lock for a vehicle bonnet or boot lid comprises a latch member 13 controlled by a key operated locking mechanism which permits the bonnet or lid to be opened without access to the interior of the car but prevents it being opened by an unauthorised person and further comprising a safety catch 27 for preventing the bonnet or boot lid from flying open if the latch member has not been properly engaged. The latch member 13 is retained in the locking position against the action of spring 24 by a pawl 16 having a nose 17 which engages an abutment 18 on the latch member. The pawl is pivoted on a pin 19 and its tail 20 co-operates with a flat 21 on a rotatable follower part 22 coupled to the key-operated lock 9 (not shown). The safety catch 27 is mounted on a pin 37 and is held in the latching position by spring 28. A follower part 26 on a common spigot with the follower part 22 engages a step 30 on the safety catch. When the key is operated the spigot is turned and first releases the pawl 16 from the catch 13, releasing a striker 10. Further rotation of the key, turns the follower 26 which releases the safety catch 27. After the striker is released a further spring turns the spigot to its initial position. As the bonnet is closed the striker rides over the safety catch and downward pressure on the lower edge of the notch 15 rotates the latch member until the nose 17 and abutment 18 are re-engaged. In a modification the key releases a handle which turns the spigot to release the catch members.
