Abstract

1,252,149. Door latches. AISIN SEIKI CO. Ltd. 9 Dec., 1968 [9 Dec., 1967; 29 June, 1968; 10 Aug., 1968], No. 58489/68. Heading E2A. A door latch comprises a latch member for latching engagement with a striker pin, a pivotal pawl engageable with the latch member for retaining the latch member in latching engagement with the striker pin a locking lever and a pawl releasing lever mounted on the locking lever such that movement of the locking lever into locking position shifts the pawl releasing lever into an inoperative position. The latch member, a bolt' 18, is pivotally mounted on a base and spring urged to the unlatching position, and the pawl 19 has a tooth for engaging one of two teeth on the bolt to hold the bolt in safety latching and fully latching positions in which it engages a striker 12 on a vehicle. The releasing lever 56 is spring urged to the releasing position and is mounted on a pin 57 on the T-shaped locking lever 54. The releasing lever 56 is operable by either a rod 60 or a lever 65 outside and inside the vehicle respectively to engage a projection 19b on the pawl and rotate it to releasing position. Locking is effected by rotating the lever 54 from inside through a rod 81 and from outside by a key operated rod 58. The locking lever is connected by a spring 66 to the pawl 19 so that if the inner locking means is erroneously actuated and the door is closed from outside, extension of the spring 66 causes the locking lever to rotate to unlocking position. Keyless locking is effected by holding the outside handle in latch releasing position and the inner locking rod 81 operatively depressed. The end of the releasing lever 56 then extends into an opening in a base flange and an offset surface of the lever 56 aligns with the projection 19b of the pawl, to maintain the latching engagement and prevent rotation of the lock bolt to unlocking .position. In another embodiment, the releasing lever 56 has a lateral projection for engaging the projection on the pawl. The pivot of the locking lever 54 extends through an elongated slot therein and unintentional movement of the locking lever is prevented by the pivot of the releasing lever 56 engaging in one end of a W-shaped slot in the latch cover. In a further embodiment a part of the releasing lever which is folded over has two elongated slots superimposed at an angle one to the other to retain the pawl pivot and the coaxial locking lever pivot respectively to decrease the sliding friction between the two parts. The end of the locking lever abuts the striking pin during closing of the door whereby releasing any locking action. The striker 12 engages a spring-loaded plastics sliding block 23 to prevent door rattle.
