Abstract

1,009,116. Rotary fluid-flow meters. S. S. SMITH. Oct. 2, 1962 [Oct. 2, 1961], No. 37377/62. Heading FIF. A rotary fluid-flow meter of the impulse turbine type comprises a pair of identical casing sections 12, 14 (Figs. 2, 4), defining a helical conduit 10 for fluid flowing from an inlet 22 to an outlet 24 between a ring of blades 38 on a rotor 34 attached to a shaft 44, the conduit being such that the majority of blades 38 lie in the path of the fluid at any instant when the rotor is rotating. A magnetic pick-up 54 (Fig. 1) connected to an indicator 60 is actuated by a toothed wheel 52 which is attached to shaft 44. By-passing of the rotor by the fluid is rendered negligible by a narrow clearance provided between reinforcing plates 37 for the hub 36 of the rotor and overlapping portions 43 of sections 12, 14, and between reinforcing rings 39 for the blades and a groove 40. The axial position of shaft 44 relative to sections 12, 14, is adjustable by a nut 51 engaging with one of a pair of bearings 46 for the shaft. The meter may be made of stainless steel and shaft 44 may extend beyond section 12 such that small amounts of power can be taken off the rotor.
