Abstract

898,147. Rotary meters. METER-FLOW Ltd. Jan. 27, 1961 [Jan. 27, 1960], No. 2981/60. Class 110 (2). A rotary flowmeter comprises a cylindrical main body member 10, Fig. 2, mounting on upstream and downstream bearings 12, 13, a rotor 17 having radially extending vanes 20 and an electromagnetic unit sensing and counting the passage of the vanes as the rotor rotates. To relieve the end thrust of the rotor against the downstream bearing, fluid upstream of the bearing 12 which is at a static pressure higher than that immediately downstream of the vanes is admitted through a duct 33, 34 to a space constituted by the conical end face 30 of a bush 29 carried by the rotor and an adjacent conical end face 31 on the downstream bearing 13 to urge the rotor away from the downstream bearing. The end faces 30, 31 are coned at different angles with the end face 30 having the smaller apex angle. The bearings are supported by ring-like supports 14, Fig. 1, inserted into recesses 16 in the body member 10 and then pressed into body member recesses 15 and rotated through 60 degrees to expand into the recesses 15. Additional or alternatively to the duct 33, 34, the downstream bearing 13 may be formed with a duct 35 connected by radial passages 36 to a position where the static pressure is again higher than that immediately downstream of the vanes.
