Abstract

1,009,066. Rotary 1.C. engines. W. B. McCALL. Aug. 1, 1962, No. 29590/62. Heading F1F. A rotary internal combustion engine comprises two rotors 14 and 18 rotating about axes at right angles to one another and having peripheral cut-outs 33, 34 and 35, 36 respectively which engage the remaining peripheral projections 51, 52 and 49, 50 respectively as the rotors rotate. An inlet and an exhaust opening communicate with each rotor chamber, and are separated by rotary abutments 60, 65 which have cut-outs to allow the peripheral projections of the rotors to pass. As the rotors rotate, fuel-air mixture is drawn into the cut-outs 34 and 35 (see Fig. 2) on the inlet sides of the abutments, and, considering only the charge in the cut-out 34, is compressed against the flank of the portion 52, which is then in engagement with the cut-out 34, into an adjacent combustion chamber, where it is ignited and allowed to expand into the cut out portion 35. The stages of the working cycle appear in more detail in (Figs 5-8 not shown). Throttle valves may be fitted in the inlets and exhaust openings, to control the power output and to provide engine braking. The engine may operate by spark ignition or compression ignition.
