Abstract
1,008,999. Turn-sensitive devices employing vibrating masses. A. KAROLUS. March 13, 1964 [March 21, 1963], No.11181/63. Heading G1C. In a rotation responsive device employing a vibrating element disposed so that its moment of inertia about a reference axis changes as it vibrates the vibratory element being disposed in a frame attached to a main body by two torsion bars. The natural frequency of vibration of the vibratory element and its natural frequency of rotational oscillation about the reference axis are both predominantly dependent on the same elastic property of the material of which the element is constructed. In Fig. 1 two vibratory elements 1, 2 are each mounted on a torsion bar 3, 4 respectively supported by members 5, 6 (the member 6 is obscured by the member 5). The members 5, 6 are carried on a bar 7 which is attached to a frame 8 by torsion bars 9, 10, the common axis 15 of the torsion bars 9,10 forming the reference axis. All the parts so far mentioned are machined from a single block of steel. The frame 8 is mounted on a main body by way of torsion bars 13,14 and leaf springs 11,12. The element 1, 2 are vibrated by means not shown and these vibrations cause vibration of the frame 8 along the axis 15, this vibration being allowed for by the springs 11,12. A detecting means (not shown) is provided to detect and measure torsional oscillation of the bar 7 which will be caused by rotation of the device about the axis 15 giving signals responsive to this rotation. Suitable natural vibration frequencies are given in the Specification together with provisions regarding damping of some of the vibrations produced. Specification 947,310 is referred to.
