Abstract
789,611. Accelerometers. ROE & CO., Ltd., A. V. April 24, 1956 [May 3, 1955], No. 12763/55. Class 40 (1). In an accelerometer, the tension of a vibrating wire is varied by acceleration, changes in its vibration frequency being detected by reference to a second wire which, in the absence of acceleration, vibrates at the same frequency as the first wire. As shown, two wires 1, 2 disposed between magnet poles along an axis A-A of the instrument housing are kept in oscillation at their natural frequencies by oscillators 10, 11. Acceleration displaces two weights 8, 9, each connected to one of the wires 1, 2, and inter. connected by a spring 7, thus increasing the frequency of oscillation of one wire and decreasing that of the other. The output of the oscillator 10 is fed to a phase-splitter 12 which produces two signals in quadrature, each of which is mixed with the output of the oscillator 11 in one of two modulators 13, 14, whose output signals are used to drive a two-phase synchronous motor 15 which in turn drives a counter 17 to indicate in terms of velocity.
