Abstract

An electromagnetic oscillator comprises at least one flexion vibrator cruciform element having four equal flexible branches L1, L2 radiating in a single plane perpendicular to an axis a-a from a central fixed support S along two mutually perpendicular diameters and provided at their ends with magnetic armatures A1, A2 a stationary pick up and a stationary motor winding Bob each common to all branches and coaxial with the axis, and an electric circuit P, TR, &c. to energize the motor winding in response to signals induced in the pick-up winding to maintain the branches in vibration parallel to the axis by applying to the ends of each pair lying on the same diameter oscillating forces of the same magnitude and direction those F1 on half the pairs being of opposite phase to those F2 on the remaining pairs. The branches may be of metal e.g. Elinvar, or quartz, and formed separately or integrally. The armatures are permanent magnets e.g. of ferrite, and both they and the windings may be of the straight form shown or, Fig. 4, circular. The oscillatory motion may be converted to a rotary motion for driving a clock by the addition of poles P1, P2 which couple with magnetized poles p of a rotor wheel R fixed on a rotary spindle r driving, through gear trains E1 . . . E3 clock hands I1 ... I3 The oscillation frequency of, e.g. between 10 and 1,000 c.p.s., may be regulated by a system of masses, and self-starting and unidirectional rotor movement achieved by making the poles p ... p2 or their intervening notches asymmetrical or a mechanical ratchet may be provided.
