Abstract

1,008,632. Electro-photographic materials. RENKER-BELIPA G.m.b.H. Oct. 2, 1961 [Oct. 3, 1960], No. 35562/61. Heading H1K. The photoconductive layer of an electrophotographic material consists of the filmforming polyaddition product of a photoconductive compound and a compound containing isocyanate and/or epoxy groups The molecules of the photo-conductive compound may contain one or more of the following substituents responsible for reaction with isocyanate or epoxy groups: reactive -H, -NH 2 , -NHR, =NH, -COOH, -CONH 2 , -CONHR, -SO 3 H, -SO 2 NH 2 , -SO 2 NHR, -OH, -SH, -O-(rest of inorganic acid)-H, wherein R represents a substituted or unsubstituted hydrocarbon radical or a heterocyclic or isocyclic ring system. The Specification gives examples of suitable isocyanate or epoxy compounds and has a varied list of suitable classes of photoconductive compounds. When polyfunctional isocyanate or epoxy compounds are used some of the isocyanate or epoxy groups may be reacted with non-photo-conductive additive materials which influence the properties of the product. Suitable additives have, for example, one or more hydroxyl, amino, or carboxylic acid groups in their molecules. When the additive is not mono-functional, a cross-linked product is obtained The additive may be reacted with some of the groups of the isocyanate or epoxy compound before the reaction between the main components, it may be added simultaneously with the photoconductive compound, or it may be reacted with isocyanate or epoxy groups remaining after the reaction between the main components. Known sensitizers may be added to the product before it is used to form the layer. The product may be formed by known methods on to a wide variety of support materials including, in specific examples, a fibre glass web impregnated with synthetic resins and vapourcoated with aluminium, and a copper foil with an even upper surface but with a spongy lower surface coated with a high melting point synthetic resin or with caoutchouc. The Specification describes generally the use of the electro-photographic materials. The 22 specific examples detail the preparations of particular materials and in several cases give details relating to cleaning, exposure, development, and conversion of the developed product to printing plates.
