An apparatus for winding a wrapper D (Figs. 2 and 3) over a cigar filler or bunch Z having two lower rollers 5, 6 each of which is associated with an upper roller 21, 20 respectively rotatably mounted on a pivoted support 14, 13, is characterized in that the lower rollers are operatively connected to driving gears 10, 11 and 12, and the upper rollers are freely rotatable, friction wheels 50a, 50b-53a, 53b being provided each of which is disposed with its axis parallel to the axes of the upper and lower rollers and engages the respective associated upper and lower rollers. The apparatus is mounted between blocks 3 on a frame 1. The supports 14, 13 are rotatably mounted on the shafts 4, 4alpha of the lower rollers 5, 6, have clamped apertures 15, 15alpha and are connected to each other in pairs by rods 16, 16a. Levers 17, 17alpha are fixed to the rods 16, 16alpha and are connected to control levers 18, 18alpha which may be moved up and down to close and open the nest rollers. The supports 13, 14 carry the spindles for the upper rollers 20, 21 and the friction wheels 50alpha, 50b-53a, 53b are telescopically mounted at the free ends of arms 58 (Fig. 4) the other ends of which are pivotally mounted on supports 62-65 fixed to the rods 16, 16alpha. The friction rollers may thus be moved from an operative to an inoperative position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4. A vertically movable lift member 27 is provided having a number of forked members 30 which pass through annular grooves in the lower rollers. The forked members are in their upper position when the nest of rollers is opened for insertion of a cigar bunch. The wrapper D is introduced over a tensioning plate 36 by a pair of suction heads 37 (Fig. 11). When the wrapper is sufficiently advanced a plunger 48 contacts one arm 47 of a bell crank lever 43 pivoted in a bearing 46 and rotates it anti-clockwise. The other arm of the bell crank lever 43 has a slot 45 in which a stud 42 on a lever 41 is located. The lever 41 is mounted on an axis 40 projecting from the suction head and operates a deflecting member 38 which deflects the wrapper between the bunch Z and the upper roller 21.
