Abstract

2,3,6-Trichlorobenzoic acid is made by subjecting 2,3,6-trichlorobenzonitrile to a treatment known per se for conversion of aromatic nitriles to corresponding aromatic carboxylic acids. The 2,3,6-trichloro-benzonitrile may be first converted into the carboxylic acid amide by the action of a base or a mineral acid and further hydrolysing the amide to the acid. For example, the nitrile may be treated with alcoholic alkali, preferably sodium or potassium hydroxide, to convert it to the amide, which is then treated with nitrosyl-sulphuric acid to produce the carboxylic acid. The 2,3,6-trichlorobenzonitrile may be made as described in Specification 947,167, or by treatment of a corresponding dichloronitrobenzonitrile, preferably the 2,3-dichloro-6-nitro compound, with chlorine at an elevated temperature.ALSO:A herbicidal composition contains as active constituent 2, 3, 6-trichlorobenzoic acid produced by subjecting 2, 3, 6-trichlorobenzointrile to a treatment known per se for the conversion of aromatic nitriles to aromatic carboxylic acids, for example by treatment of the nitrile with alcoholic alkali to form the amide which is treated with nitrosyl-sulphuric acid to give 2, 3, 6-trichlorobenzoic acid.
