Abstract
1,008,510. Guiding pistons; seals. F. A. WETTSTEIN. Jan. 1, 1964 [Jan. 15, 1963; July 19, 1963], No. 86/64. Headings F2B and F2T. A guiding arrangement for a piston or pistonrod in a cylinder, comprises glide blocks 27 (or 15), Figs. 1 and 2, defining a cylindrical bearing surface and movably contacting an undivided supporting element 2 (or 12). The glide blocks 27 (15) are interconnected by comparatively thin resilient stays 8 (16), or are arranged on a resilient annular member, so as to form a split resilient annular ring which is located around the piston rod 11 (or piston) by means of an annular rounded flange 6 (14) on the supporting element 2 (12) engaging corresponding grooves in the glide blocks 27 (15). Alternatively, flanges may be provided on the glide blocks and an annular groove in the supporting element. In operation, due to the tilting movement of the glide blocks and to their rounded edges, a film of liquid is formed between the blocks and the surface with which they have relative gliding movement. In Fig. 5, to allow for tilting movement, the gliding blocks 36, Fig. 6, have a cylindrical outer surface 38 in contact with a convex surface 37 at the bottom of an annular groove 35 in the supporting element 32 whereas the reverse construction is obtained between the blocks 45 and the bottom of the groove 44. The blocks 36 may also serve as sealing elements in which case the blocks and the stays 40, Fig. 7, have the same radial thickness. In Figs. 10 and 11, a part-spherical or barrel-shaped surface on the supporting element 49 contacts cylindrical surfaces 51 on the gliding blocks 52. Nose portions 53 on the element 49 provide axial stops for the interconnecting stays 54. In Fig. 14, loose glide blocks 62 having part-spherical contacting surfaces are supported in a groove in the supporting element which has a cylindrical contacting surface. In Fig. 15, glide blocks 64 are provided with lateral protrusions 65 which are held axially by nose portions 66 of the supporting element. Fig. 20 shows an I.C. engine piston with split guiding rings 82 on either side of the gudgeon pin and Fig. 22 shows an arrangement of loose gliding blocks 89 held between stops 95 on a similar piston, two axially spaced rows of such blocks being provided one on each side of the gudgeon pin.
