Abstract

The invention comprises R- lower alkano-amidines in which R represents an N,N-alkyleneimino group, the alkylene group containing six to ten carbon atoms as chain members and the lower alkano-amidine containing up to eight carbon atoms, and acid addition salts thereof, pharmaceutical and veterinary preparations containing them, and their preparation by (a) reducing the corresponding amidoxime or a salt thereof with hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst, or (b) reacting a corresponding lower alkyl R- lower alkano-thioimidate (in which the lower alkyl group contains up to eight carbon atoms) or a salt thereof with ammonia or a salt thereof, optionally followed in either case by conversion to the free base or an acid addition salt. 4 - (1 - N,N - Hexamethyleneimino) butyramidoxime is prepared by condensing N,N-hexamethyleneimine with 4-bromobutyronitrile and reacting the resulting 4-(1-N,N-hexamethyleneimino) butyronitrile with hydroxylamine hydrochloride in the presence of sodium ethoxide. The compounds of the invention are useful in the treatment of hypertensive conditions and functional peripheral vascular diseases and may be administered enterally (e.g. orally) or parenterally in the form of pharmaceutical or veterinary preparations (e.g. tablets, dragees, capsules, solutions, suspensions or emulsions) containing them, with or without other (unspecified) active ingredients, in admixture or conjunction with a carrier.
