Abstract

1,007,859. Releasable fastenings. SUPERFLEXIT Ltd. Sept. 20, 1963 [Dec. 14, 1962; Feb. 4, 1963], Nos. 47335/62 and 4457/63. Heading E2A. [Also in Divisions F2 and H2] An end fitting for a hose 2 comprises a tapering nipple 1 for entry into the hose and a ferrule 3 for enclosing the part of the hose containing the nipple, the wall of the hose being gripped between the nipple 1 and ferrule 3 as the result of forcing the ferrule in a direction against the taper until annular grooves 6, 7 in the nipple and ferrule register to form a composite groove of circular cross-section whereupon they are locked by a length of wire 4 threaded through a hole 5 in the ferrule until it extends round the full length of the groove, fitting closely therein. A short length of wire is left projecting from the entrance hole so that it may be pulled out to dismantle the end fitting. A compression tool for applying axial force facilitates insertion and removal of the wire. Both nipple and ferrule may have parallel conical faces 9, 10, Fig. 1 to grip the hose 2 which has helically wound internal and external open pitch reinforcement 11, 12. An annular, rubber grommet 13 forces the end of the hose into an annular groove 8 in the nipple 1 as it is forced into the ferrule. As shown in Fig. 2 the nipple is externally threaded to receive the end 11a of wire reinforcement and a split metal sleeve 15 is inserted beneath embedded, screening, reinforcement 14, where it is exposed by cutting back the outer rubber covering. The sleeve 15 abuts a shoulder of the nipple 1 electrically connecting the screen 14 thereto and the screen 14 also contacts the ferrule 3 which is electrically connected with the nipple 1 by the locking wire 4. The screening reinforcement 14 may be braided. Modifications of these two embodiments are described with details of suitable methods of assembly, Figs. 3 to 10 (not shown).
