Abstract

1,007,283. Covering cores by winding. METAL CONTAINERS Ltd. June 12, 1964 [May 24, 1963], No. 20813/63. Heading B8G. [Also in Divisions B4-B5] A double shell vessel of resinimpregnated filaments is made by a two-stage winding process, the first stage involving winding on to a collapsible mandrel and the second stage involving winding on to the shell formed in the first stage. The mandrel comprises stave - like members 11, Fig. 1, supported at one end by a hub 12 mounted on a rotary shaft 13 threaded at 14 for attachment to a winding machine. The members 11 are supported at their other ends by a ring 17 mounted on a fitting member 18 located by a centring ring 21 secured to the shaft 13 by a nut 22. A release agent, e.g. a winding of polypropylene strap or two polypropylene caps, may be applied to the surface of the mandrel. The first shell 24 is then wound on the mandrel. A retaining ring 25 is then fitted to the member 18 and is held by a cap 25 so as to clamp the edge 26 of the shell 24 between the flanges 27, 28 of the members 26, 18. The resin of the first shell is now cured by heat or by a chemical action. The ring 21 and nut 22 are removed to allow withdrawal of the shaft 13 and the hub 12 so that the staves 11 and the ring 17 can be withdrawn out of the hole 31, Fig. 3. The first shell is now mounted on a shaft 34 by screwing on the fitting 18 and the shaft 34 is attached to a winding machine. A centring pin 38 extends from the shaft 34 into a closure fitting 37 and the second shell 39 is now wound on the first shell 24 and a retaining ring 41 is attached to the fitting and resin bonded thereto. The second shell is then cured and the shaft 34 unscrewed from the fitting 18 and withdrawn. In a second embodiment the ring 25 and the fitting 18 are omitted and the first shell has a shaft centring projection.
