Abstract

1,007,152. Pelleting hay, &c. JOHN DEERE-LANZ A.G. Nov. 2, 1961, No. 39268/61. Heading A2B. [Also in Division A2] A machine for compressing hay &c. into pellets or wafers comprises a pair of press wheels 186, 188, Fig. 13, arranged tangentially at A<1>, the wheel 186 having circumferentially spaced die openings 194, the hay &c. being fed, as by an auger 202 to the bite B<1> between the press wheels and the wheel 186 having a face 206 affording a backing means against which the material is fed so that it is pre-compressed in a direction parallel to the axes of the wheels. The compressed pellets are extruded radially outwardly through the openings 194 and pass to a conveyer 32. Fig. 3 shows the complete machine for pelletising in the field with pick-up means 26 for the crop which is conveyed rearwardly to the bite between two press wheels 58, 30 arranged side by side instead of one with the other as in Fig. 13, each having spaced die openings, the die blocks in each wheel registering with the die openings in the other wheel. A hollow conical drum 150 compresses the hay &c. axially towards the bite between the wheels, and the compressed material is forced radially inwardly through the dies of both wheels and falls on to the conveyer 32. The outlet ends of the die openings are adjustable by a bendable portion 198 on the wheel and screws 196.
