Abstract

1,006,869. Hydraulic apparatus. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. Nov. 11, 1963 [Nov. 12, 1962], No. 42649/62. Heading F1P. [Also in Division F2] The piston 1 of a hydraulic actuator is sealed against leakage from the cylinder space by a flexible diaphragm 5 secured at its central area to the piston head and at its periphery to the cylinder 2 at a point 7 thus forming a sleeve 6 which is supported at its bight 8 by an annular resilient member 9 which is movable axially within the gap 20 between the piston and cylinder by means, e.g. a rack and pinion at half the rate of displacement of the piston. Each of three circumferentially spaced racks 17 (only one of which is shown) is secured to the piston skirt 20 and drives a pinion 16 secured by a bracket 19 to one end 209 of member 9 whereby the pinion rides over a rack 18 secured in a slot 22 cut in the cylinder wall. The piston I carries a wear piece 41 abutting one end 40 of a slidable push-rod 26 carrying a renewable end piece 38 serving to press the upper ring 75, Fig. 4 (not shown), of a ball mill as described in Specification 1,006,870.
