A ventilator, e.g. for fitting in a window, roof light or door of a building or door or rear light of a vehicle, comprises at least one cylindrical housing 1 with diametrically opposed inlet and outlet apertures 16, 17 and a cylindrical shutter within the housing reciprocable about its axis between a position permitting and a position obstructing air flow between the inlet and outlet apertures. The shutter and housing each comprise a pair of diametrically opposed arcuate plates 19 and 2,3 respectively, the ends of the plates engaging peripheral recesses in end discs 18 and 4, 5. The discs 18 are rotatably mounted on balls 23 and the shutter is urged into the closed position by a torsion spring 24, Fig. 5, and opened by a cord 27, Fig. 4, having one or more buttons 32 for engagement in a jawed retaining bracket 31. The shutter plates may carry flexible sealing strips which ride over the inner surface of the housing. The apertures in the shutter or housing may be covered by a wire mesh or perforated screen. The end discs or plates 2, 3 of the housing each have a channelled flange which may receive a panel or pane of glass, and these plates may have supplementary apertures to allow some flow of air when the shutter is closed. The ventilator is shown fitted at the top of a window frame 28, so that the lower flange only receives a pane of glass 30, but may be otherwise positioned. The housing body may be integrally formed with the frame. A multi-unit ventilator is described (Fig. 6, not shown).
