Abstract

The invention comprises amine salts, especially betaine, choline, methenamine, morpholine and piperazine salts, of pyrrolidone carboxylic acid, and this preparation thereof by reacting the acid with the amine or a salt of the acid with an amine salt in an inert solvent consisting of water, a liquid C1-6-alkanol or a mixture of these, and recovering the amine salt of the carboxylic acid. Pyrrolidone carboxylic acid is prepared by autoclaving glutamic acid and water. Pharmaceutical compositions, used to increase the blood serum level of pyrrolidone carboxylic acid to produce a psychotonic effect or to produce a reduction in the blood level of serum gamma-globulin, comprise an amine salt of pyrrolidone carboxylic acid and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier. The compositions may be formulated as tablets, capsules, powders, granules or solutions for oral administration or as solutions for parenteral administration.
