Abstract

1,006,609. Electrophotographic materials. EASTMAN KODAK CO. May 1, 1962 [May 1, 1961], No. 16623/62. Heading H1K. [Also in Division G2] An electrophotographic material comprises a support carrying a photo-conductive layer containing a dispersion of photo-conductive zinc oxide and an organic amino compound in an organic polymeric binder, the organic amino compound being present in an amount between 0.01 and 4.0% of the weight of zinc oxide and conforming to one of the two general formulµ R 1 R 2 R 3 N and R 1 R 2 R 3 R 4 NX where X is a halogen atom and R 1 R 2 R 3 and R 4 which may be the same or different are chosen from C 1-22 straight chain saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbon radicals, C 2-22 saturated linear #-amino groups, polyethylamino groups having up . to 22 carbon atoms, ethylamino groups, and hydrogen atoms. Preferably in R 1 R 2 R 3 N not more than two R groups are hydrogen atoms and in R 1 R 2 R 3 R 4 NX not more than three R groups are hydrogen atoms. The preferred binder is a mixture of a styrene-butadiene copolymer, a polysiloxane, and a pure hydrocarbon thermoplastic terpene polymer composed essentially of #-pinene. Other possible binders are those of Specification 932,869 (mixtures of a styrenebutadiene copolymer and a polysiloxane), polystyrene, chlorinated rubber, rubber chlorohydrate, shellac, cellulose ethers, cellulose esters, polyvinyl butyral, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl acetate, and copolymers of vinyl acetate and vinyl chloride. Supports mentioned are of aluminium foil laminate and of Nesa glass. Optical sensitizers such as fluorescein, Rose Bengal, and Crystal Violet may be incorporated in the photo-conductive layer and the zinc oxide may be modified and/or sensitized by known methods or by the chemical methods disclosed in Specifications 1,005,245, 1,005,246 and 1,005,247. Surface-active agents such as sodium dioctyl sulphosuccinate and sodium bistridecyl sulphosuccinate may be included in the photo-conductive layer so that the layer may be more readily wetted during electrolytic development of the exposed plate. Details of electrolytic development are given in the Specification (see Division G2).
