Abstract

A refractory composition which may be slurried with water and sprayed on to hot furnace walls comprises 82-92 parts by weight of chrome ore, from 1-6 parts of free iron oxide (present in the chrome ore are added) 10-40 parts of free magnesia, 6-12 parts of a binding agent, 0.25-5 parts of a dispersing agent/1 part of binder and 1-5 parts of a suspending agent, the particle size of the composition being 20-40% + 100 A.S.T.M. mesh, 40-55% + 200 mesh and 45-60% - 200 mesh. The chrome ore must contain an amount of chromite which exceeds the amount of any other single constituent. Binders specified are sodium silicates. Dispersing agents specified are conventional dispersers, metal salts or amyl sulphonic acid and sulphonated petroleum products. Suspending agents specified are clay and carboxymethyl cellulose.
