Abstract

1,015,515. Furnace linings. QUIGLEY CO. Inc. Dec. 28, 1962, No. 48872/62. Heading F4B. An open hearth furnace lining has sprayed on to its flame exposed face, while the furnace is operating, at least two refractory coatings in superimposed relationship, the first coat reacting with the iron oxide and slag on the lining to form spinels of higher refractoriness than the coat itself and the second coat reacting with iron oxide and slag to form spinels of higher refractoriness than the second coat, the more refractory part of the second coat absorbing and reacting with the iron oxide and slag during normal operation to a greater extent than the other part of the coat so that spinels of a higher refractoriness than the materials comprising the second coat are formed. A chrome-magnesia lining is sprayed with a slurry composed of finely ground chrome ore and magnesia, in approximately the same proportions as the lining, and binder dispersing and suspension agents to facilitate the application of the slurry. One or more coats are applied upon the first, the amounts of chrome ore decreasing and magnesite increasing with each additional coat while still being compatible with the previous coat. The method is applicable to acid and neutral linings also. A suitable composition for a priming coat includes chrome ore, iron oxide (either present in or added to the chrome ore), colloidal clay as the suspension agent, sodium silicate as the binder and metal salts of amyl sulphonic acid as the dispersing agent. Some slurries may be warmed to between 90‹ and 140‹ F. to ensure dilution. Highly refractory materials such as thorium, berylium, zirconium, dolomite and alumina may be used with this method.
