Abstract

1,005,931. Crash barriers; posts. H. BERTRAM. April 9, 1964 [Sept. 13, 1963], No. 14793/64. Headings E1B and E1G. A roadway crash barrier comprises tubular posts 20 secured by frangible shear pins 22 to ground embedded sleeves 21, the posts supporting a plurality of longitudinal wires, such that on impact by a vehicle the posts shear successively at their base connections to reduce the transverse vehicle forces and guide the vehicle in the direction of the barrier. The pins 22 have spigots for engagement with the posts and sleeves and a central flange to rest on the upper end of the sleeve, a reduction in diameter of the pin above the flange provides for fracture at a predetermined stress. The pins are preferably of cast iron, and the wires support wire mesh to provide a cushion effect.
